Your home provides protection from the weather, and it should be relatively comfortable year-round. However, if there are issues with your home, it can be more difficult to regulate the temperature inside your home and make for a more uncomfortable environment. If it’s humid outside and you find yourself asking, “Why is my house so humid?”, here are a few reasons why your house could be feeling humid and what to do about them:

Faulty HVAC systems can cause humid rooms.

Drafty windows and doors can contribute to a humid interior.

Siding issues can cause a humid house.

A humid house can be caused by issues with the roof.

Poorly insulated attics can create humid homes.

Unfinished basements can be humid.

A humid bathroom could be caused by poor ventilation or plumbing issues.

A humid kitchen could be caused by insufficient airflow or ventilation issues.

Humidity inside can mean not enough insulation around the home.

1. Faulty HVAC Systems Can Cause Humid Rooms

One of the reasons why your house could be humid is because of faulty or underperforming HVAC systems. If an air conditioner is not removing enough moisture from the air, it can result in a humid room. A/C units that are not the right size for the room they are cooling, whether that is too small or too big, tend to result in a more humid room.

If air conditioners are too large, they cool the room faster than they remove moisture, which results in more humidity in the room. Air conditioners that are outdated or underperforming can also cause your house to be humid. Poorly maintained AC units also tend to result in humidity problems. Clogged filters, dirty coils, and more can contribute to an underperforming AC unit and a humid room.

If you suspect your HVAC system is the source of your humidity problem, make sure it is in good shape and is the right system for your home (or unit for a specific room, if it is a window or portable AC unit). Check the unit and filters. Clean anything that needs to be cleaned and make necessary repairs or replacements.

Depending on what is going on and the system you have, you may need to have your HVAC system serviced. If everything with your HVAC system or AC unit is fine and you are still running into humidity issues, there is something else going on.

2. Drafty Windows and Doors Can Contribute to a Humid Interior

Outdated or damaged windows and doors can no longer properly insulate your home. This can result in your house being humid inside when it is humid outside, and make your HVAC system work harder to manage interior temperatures. This is why a humid home and drafty windows and doors are silent signs your house has problems.

Damage, cracked seals, condensation, and more are visible signs of drafty windows and doors. If your house is humid and you see these signs, it could be time to replace your doors and windows. This will re-seal and insulate your home and help keep the interior temperature more comfortable and consistent. And, if you need to replace doors and windows anyway, you take the opportunity to consider different styles and efficiency upgrades for even more benefits of new windows and doors.

3. Siding Issues Can Cause a Humid House

Any gaps or inefficiencies in your home’s exterior mean gaps or inefficiencies in its protective barrier. If it’s humid inside your house, issues with your siding could be a potential cause. If your siding is damaged, outdated, installed incorrectly, or poorly insulated, these can all contribute to temperature regulation issues inside your home, as well as other potential damage to your home. These can also be signs your house needs new siding. If your siding is the source of your humidity issue, replacing it should fix the problem.

4. A Humid House Can Be Caused By Issues With the Roof

Your roof is one of your home’s first lines of defense against the outside, and it is essential for properly protecting and insulating your home. Any issues with the roof itself or a lack of proper roof ventilation can contribute to humidity and inconsistent temperatures inside your home. Excessive temperatures and humidity inside your home can be a sign that you don’t have proper roof ventilation.

If your home’s humidity is caused by poor roof ventilation, you may not have to replace your roof, provided it is in good shape. In this case, fixing the ventilation should solve your problem. However, if you’re also seeing damage to the roof, missing shingles, and more, these are signs your roof needs to be replaced. A reputable home improvement contractor with roofing experience will be able to diagnose the issue with your home and determine whether your roof can be repaired or needs to be replaced.

5. Poorly Insulated Attics Can Create Humid Homes

Proper roof ventilation is important, and so is good insulation in your attic. Poorly insulated attics, especially without proper roof ventilation, tend to get very hot and humid in the summer and can affect the rest of the home, too.

This is also why not having enough insulation is one of the attic renovation mistakes to avoid. Provided your attic has no other issues, if poor insulation is the cause, adding insulation should resolve the problem. However, if there are other things causing your home to be humid, you will need to work with your contractor to address them.

6. Unfinished Basements Can Be Humid

Basements can have reputations for being humid. Humidity in the basement can be a sign that your basement has excess moisture and is also usually a sign of poor insulation in the basement. This can be a common issue with unfinished basements.

This can be one of the reasons why keeping an unfinished basement could be a mistake. If your basement is unfinished and humid, working with a contractor to handle any moisture issues or leaks and then finishing it should fix the problem.

If your finished basement is humid, you may have a leak somewhere, foundation issues, issues with basement windows, or another issue affecting insulation in the basement. An experienced contractor will be able to work with you to diagnose the source of the problem and recommend solutions based on what is going on.

7. A Humid Bathroom Could Be Caused By Poor Ventilation or Plumbing Issues

It’s normal for a bathroom to feel a little humid after it’s been used for a shower. However, this should clear out relatively quickly with the use of the exhaust fan. If your bathroom is still humid for a long time after a shower, even with the use of a fan, or is humid even when the bathroom has not been in use, you could be looking at an issue with ventilation or plumbing.

Bathrooms are high-moisture, high-humidity environments. Without good ventilation, the bathroom can be uncomfortably humid and will also be more prone to growing mildew and mold. Any issues with plumbing can result in excess moisture in the bathroom as well as leaks and water damage if issues are left unchecked.

What to Do If Your Bathroom is Humid

Depending on what is going on with your bathroom, here are a few things you can do if your bathroom is humid to help make it more comfortable:

Air it out with windows, doors, and the exhaust fan.

Check and clean the exhaust fan.

Make sure the exhaust fan is venting outside properly.

Replace and upgrade the exhaust fan.

Replace bathroom windows if needed.

Add a bathroom window if there isn’t one.

Fix plumbing issues and upgrade fixtures.

Remodel the bathroom.

Air Out the Bathroom and Check the Exhaust Fan

If your bathroom is humid and you do not currently crack open windows or doors or use the exhaust fan, start using what you have available to regularly air out the bathroom. You can also use a dehumidifier to help with your efforts.

If you do regularly use the exhaust fan properly and your bathroom is still more humid than you would like, check the exhaust fan and make sure it is clean, working properly, and venting outside appropriately. If needed, replace parts or replace and upgrade the exhaust fan. The exhaust fan is a key component of good bathroom ventilation, and it makes a big difference.

Consider the Bathroom Windows

If the exhaust fan is in good shape and working correctly, and your bathroom is still humid, look over your bathroom windows next. If your bathroom does not currently have a window, consider a small remodeling project to add one for better airflow and ventilation. If you see damage on your bathroom windows or signs of poor insulation, these are reasons to replace windows.

Just as drafty or poorly insulated windows and doors affect your house and can make it difficult to regulate interior temperature, the same thing is true for your bathroom windows. If your bathroom windows are outdated or damaged, they may not be able to insulate your home properly or regulate the environment inside the bathroom as well.

Fix Plumbing Issues and Upgrade Fixtures

Plumbing issues or outdated or broken fixtures can result in excess moisture in the bathroom and contribute to a humid bathroom. Plumbing issues or issues with fixtures can also contribute to leaks and water damage that can be costly to repair.

If you know you need to repair or replace leaky bathroom fixtures, make sure you prioritize doing so to avoid further damage to your home. Leaks are one of the things homeowners should not delay fixing. If you suspect plumbing issues in your humid bathroom, contact a contractor you trust to come take a look. They will be able to identify what is going on and provide the recommended next steps you need to take. Depending on the issue, they may be able to fix it while they are there.

Remodel the Bathroom

If you’ve gone through the checklist and your bathroom is still humid and uncomfortable, consider that it might be time to remodel your bathroom. High humidity and moisture are not necessarily always reasons to remodel, but they can be signs of larger issues that a remodel would fix.

If you are considering bathroom remodeling as a potential solution to your humidity problem, also think about what else you want to improve about your bathroom. If you need to do some work anyway and there are other things you want in your bathroom, it’s often a good opportunity and cost-effective to do a larger project at once.

8. A Humid Kitchen Could Be Caused By Insufficient Airflow or Ventilation Issues

Similar to issues with airflow and ventilation in the bathroom, insufficient airflow or ventilation issues in the kitchen can make it humid. In addition to poor insulation contributing to a more humid interior when it is humid outside, cooking, baking, and more can add moisture and steam to a kitchen.

This only creates an even more humid and uncomfortable environment without proper airflow or ventilation. Not only does this make your kitchen uncomfortable, but it also causes damage to your kitchen over time, and the fumes from cooking can negatively affect indoor air quality and health. This is why ventilation is important in the kitchen.

What to Do If Your Kitchen is Humid

Depending on the source of the issue, here are some things you can do if your kitchen is humid:

Open a window and use the range hood.

Check and clean your range hood.

Repair or replace your range hood.

Add a window if your kitchen does not have one.

Replace or upgrade your existing kitchen window.

Remodel the kitchen.

Check the Range Hood

Ventilation hoods are exhaust fans for the kitchen. They remove smoke, steam, fumes, and more from the kitchen and filter them outside. If you don’t use the range hood while cooking, or if it isn’t working properly, it can be difficult to regulate the temperature and air quality in the kitchen.

Although not always, a humid kitchen can be a sign that something is wrong with your range hood. Check over all components to make sure everything is in good condition and working properly. Also, check your range hood filter and clean it or replace it if needed. A clogged or dirty fan filter does you no favors. If your range hood is malfunctioning or broken, get it fixed or replace it if needed. These are key ways to improve kitchen ventilation.

Look at the Windows

In addition to the ventilation hood, windows are key components of good airflow and ventilation in a kitchen. If your kitchen does not currently have a window, consider a home improvement project to add one.

If you do have windows in your kitchen, look over them and make sure they are in good shape and still insulating your home properly. If they need to be replaced or aren’t what you want for your kitchen anymore, replace them or consider upgrading them to a different type of kitchen window.

Remodel the Kitchen

Similar to the bathroom and other areas of your home, humidity is always a reason to completely remodel a space. But it can be a sign of larger issues, and a remodel can make sense depending on the source of the problem and other things you want in that space.

If your kitchen is humid and you have been wanting to change the layout or upgrade materials, these can be signs that it’s time to remodel your kitchen. If this is the case, it may make sense for you and be more cost-effective to plan to remodel your kitchen to do the maintenance you need to fix the issue while also getting the kitchen you want.

9. Humidity Inside Can Mean Not Enough Insulation Around the Home

Humidity inside your home can be a sign that there is not enough insulation somewhere around your home. Siding, attics, basements, and more are common places to add insulation to your home. However, if these areas are all in good shape and properly insulated, and you are still running into high humidity in the home, there may be other areas that need more insulation, or something else may be causing the issue.

If you have questions or concerns about something going on in your home, it’s a good idea to reach out to an experienced contractor to figure out what might be going on. In the case of humidity issues in the home, you don’t want to leave it unchecked. Not only is humidity a sign of other things going on, but also leaving it unresolved can encourage mold growth in your home and lead to further issues.

Whether you need a repair on a home addition, to remodel an existing addition, or build a completely new addition, Zephyr Thomas can help. If an existing home addition is damaged, the decision to repair or replace depends on the extent of the damage and what the homeowner wants and needs. In some cases, especially if homeowners are already considering a remodel, building a new addition is a better option when the existing structure is damaged. Here’s how Zephyr Thomas helped these Reading homeowners replace and expand their home addition with a new build:

Location:

Type of Project:

Demo of Damaged Home Addition

Design and Build of New Home Addition

Expansion for a Larger Home Addition

The Problem: Tree Damage to an Old Addition

The homeowners had a glass room addition on their home. A tree hit their existing glass room and caused extensive damage. The homeowners had also been considering a remodel of this addition to expand it for more space and update the design with new features. They had an existing relationship with a deck builder who would be handling the flooring of the addition and the surrounding deck, but they needed someone who would be able to help them with the addition.

The Solution: Build a New, Expanded Home Addition

Since the damage to the glass room was extensive and the homeowners were already considering a remodel in the future, it was recommended to demolish the existing addition and build a new, larger home addition in its place, incorporating the ideas they wanted.

Zephyr Thomas demoed the existing small glass room and then reframed and stick-built a larger 12 x 16 addition with a small home office attached. Additionally, the new addition was designed to extend to the kitchen and dining room for an even more seamless integration with the home and a more functional layout for the homeowners.

The homeowners said they chose Zephyr Thomas because they trusted us, liked the design we provided for their new home addition, and liked how we implemented their ideas into the new build.

Add Space to Your Home With a Home Addition

Limited space, a layout that doesn’t work for you anymore, or damage to an existing structure can all be signs it’s time to consider a home addition. A home addition allows you to upgrade your home, add more space, and more.

The siding on your home makes a big difference in appearance, curb appeal, energy efficiency, and more. There are a lot of things to consider and options available when you need to replace your siding. Here’s how to choose the right siding for your home:

Think about durability.

Consider maintenance.

Examine performance and available upgrades.

Look at the color and style options available.

Make sure you pick the right color.

1. Think About Durability

When you see signs that you need new siding, and it’s time to replace the siding on your home, you want to make sure your new siding is durable and long-lasting. When it comes to durability, it’s hard to beat vinyl siding.

Vinyl siding is known to be tough, durable, and long-lasting. It is impervious to weathering, and you don’t have to worry about things like rot or damage from pests. Plus, it won’t dent, peel, or scratch, so it will look great for years to come.

2. Consider Maintenance

Another thing to consider when choosing the right siding for your home and for you is how much maintenance you will need to do on the siding you choose. Wood siding is notorious for requiring a lot of maintenance. Between monitoring for pests and water damage, repainting, resealing, cleaning, and more, trying to keep wood siding maintained requires a lot of time.

On the other hand, vinyl siding is virtually maintenance-free; you just have to wash it down every once in a while to keep it looking great. And, it’s quick and easy to clean vinyl siding. Not only does it protect your home from the elements and last a long time, but you also get more free time because you don’t have to spend it on maintenance tasks.

3. Examine Performance and Available Upgrades

Poor or inefficient insulation, which includes the quality of your siding, is one of the ways you might be losing money on your energy bills. This is why other important considerations in choosing the right siding for your home are:

Overall performance

Energy efficiency

Available upgrades

Properly installed vinyl siding provides a tight seal and insulation to your home. Wind won’t blow it off your home, and it helps keep out moisture, prevents drafts and air leaks, and makes your home more energy-efficient. Plus, you can opt to upgrade to insulated vinyl siding for even better energy efficiency in addition to blocking outside noise.

These are all benefits of vinyl siding that you can receive, in addition to all the benefits to your home and improvements to your comfort that new siding provides. On top of that, the vinyl siding you choose could come with a lifetime warranty, along with any guarantees or warranties your contractor offers.

4. Look at the Color and Style Options Available

Because the siding of your home has such a big impact on appearance and curb appeal, you want to take a look at the color and style options available when you choose siding for your home. There are plenty of stylish house siding ideas available, and vinyl siding can help you get the right look for any of them.

One of the benefits of vinyl siding is that it is customizable and is available in a wide variety of colors and style options. You can even get vinyl siding that looks like wood shingles, wood-grain lap siding, stone, and more. Plus, you can play with shapes to create the perfect exterior look for your home.

5. Make Sure You Pick the Right Color

Vinyl siding may be available in a wide variety of colors and styles, but it’s still important to consider the current style of your home. This is something to consider when choosing a roof color and applies to any change you want to make to your home’s exterior. Whatever colors and styles you choose for your new siding should still complement the existing architectural style of your home and boost overall curb appeal and value.

Exterior issues, like the wrong type of siding or color, are things that can hurt your home value. And if you live in an HOA, colors or styles that violate HOA regulations can carry hefty fees. Make sure you are taking all of these factors into consideration and that you are picking the right color and style of siding for your home, as these will affect your home’s exterior, your home value, and your return on investment for your new siding.

13 Tips For Choosing the Right Siding Color

Siding covers a large portion of your home’s exterior. Because of this, your siding color will have a bigger impact and have more considerations than something like choosing a front door color. The color of your front door still has a big impact on your home’s exterior, but it is easier to update than siding. A good contractor can help you make sure you have the right siding color, style, and options for your home. Here are some tips for choosing the right siding color:

Look for color palettes and styles that complement your home’s architectural style.

Make sure to account for existing elements, especially fixed elements that are difficult to change.

Take the size of your home into consideration.

Take inspiration from the various colors and styles in surrounding homes and your neighborhood.

Pick a main body color, a trim color, and an accent color, at least.

A secondary body color can work well on some homes.

Choosing light neutral colors and a soft contrast between the body and trim colors can make a home look larger.

Don’t force complex color combinations if your home doesn’t have anything that divides colors naturally.

Also consider the emotional impact of colors and color combinations.

Use a free color visualizer from a manufacturer you can trust, especially if it is the type of siding you are considering, like the CertainTeed ColorviewⓇ Visualizer.

Get siding samples.

Check how siding samples look at different times of the day and in different types of light.

If you’re trying out siding trends, make sure you like them, and they will still look good even when they are no longer popular.

8 Mistakes to Avoid When Choosing Siding Colors

When thinking about what you might want in new siding for your home, here are some mistakes to avoid when choosing siding colors:

Ignoring existing fixed elements, like your home’s roofing, stonework, landscaping, etc., when picking siding colors.

Picking overly bright colors instead of muted tones.

Choosing a color because it’s trendy, and not necessarily because it suits your home or because you like it, without evaluating whether it will still boost curb appeal when something else becomes trendy.

Ending up with a color palette that isn’t cohesive, with colors that clash instead of complementing each other.

Choosing siding colors without getting samples or seeing what they look like outside and in real light.

Ignoring the way light changes throughout the day, from morning to evening.

Only looking at small samples instead of testing large siding samples.

Testing samples on one side of your home, instead of on multiple sides.

There are a lot of things to consider and options to evaluate when you replace your windows. Whether replacing what was there with something better in the same size or remodeling your home to feature a different type of window, it’s important for your new windows to meet your needs and suit your home. Here are some window replacement must-haves to consider:

The right type of window

The right window design and performance features

Energy-efficient glass options and enhancements

Durable window frames

A good window replacement company

1. The Right Type of Window

One of the biggest window replacement must-haves is the right type of window for your needs and your home. It can be tempting to replace windows with exactly what you had, but this can be a window replacement mistake.

If your old windows were outdated, were frustrating to use, or weren’t giving your home the look and feel you wanted, replacing them with the same thing doesn’t meet your needs. Take the time to think about your reasons for replacing your windows, and then think about the types of windows that would best meet your needs.

In some cases, this could be a newer, better version of the windows you had. But, in other cases, you may decide that switching to a different type of window, considering types of custom windows, or even remodeling to expand to a larger window is a better choice for you. It all depends on why you’re replacing your windows and your goals for your home.

These are things to consider when adding or replacing windows in your home. If you’re not sure what you want or what windows would best meet your needs, an experienced contractor will be able to answer your questions.

2. The Right Window Design and Performance Features

As you consider options and shop for new windows, also consider the window design and performance features that would benefit you. Unless your window pane got broken by accident, it may have been a while since you last replaced a window.

Window technology, performance, and design are evolving all the time. There are likely new and improved options that you will want to consider for your new windows. Aside from that, think about other things that will improve your experience, like:

Tilt-in sashes for easy cleaning from the inside

Vent latches for partial and secure ventilation

Robust locks that are still easy to use for better window safety

3. Energy-Efficient Glass Options and Enhancements

Other window replacement must-haves are energy-efficient glass options. Drafty windows and doors are some of the biggest ways you might be losing money on your energy bills. If you need to replace your windows anyway, why not make sure you’re getting the enhancements that will make your home more comfortable and help you save on energy bills over time?

First, consider double-pane or triple-pane windows. Double-pane windows tend to be standard, but triple-pane windows are more insulated, offer better noise reduction, and more. From there, you can consider energy-efficient glass options and other energy-efficient window options and enhancements during installation, like:

Low-E glass panes

Additional specialized Low-E glass coatings

Thermal spacers

Argon or Krypton gas between panes

Antimicrobial weather-stripping

Window inserts

Acoustic caulk

4. Durable Window Frames

The glass options for your new windows are important, and so are the frames. Durable, low-maintenance window frames that are properly installed are window replacement must-haves.

Look for durable frame materials and frames that will support long-term structural integrity. Welded frames add strength and also help prevent water and air leaks. For frame materials, vinyl or fiberglass window frames are the superior options. They are:

Strong

Durable

Virtually maintenance-free

Resistant to warping, rotting, or corrosion

5. A Good Window Replacement Company

Another one of the must-haves for replacing windows is choosing the right window replacement company. You could have the best windows in the world, but they won’t benefit you or your home if they aren’t installed correctly.

A good window replacement company will have access to quality materials you can rely on and will have the experience and quality of work that you know you can trust. You’ll be able to benefit from the ability to choose the best options for your windows, extended warranties, guarantees on materials and work, and top-notch installation.

Plus, you’ll know your new windows have all the right permits and meet any building code requirements. These are all benefits of professional window installation that you don’t want to miss when you replace your windows.

Replace Your Windows With Zephyr Thomas

These are just a few window replacement must-haves to consider as you evaluate window options and choose the best windows for your home. A reputable home improvement contractor with plenty of experience replacing windows can help you through the process and ensure you get the windows you need and installation you can trust.

Window wells are helpful and useful features for below-grade windows. For homes on sloped lots or with in-ground, below-grade basements, window wells are a consideration. Here’s what to know about window wells, some benefits of window wells, and some considerations for them if you’re thinking about them for your home:

What is a Window Well?

A window well is a retainer that is installed around a below-grade basement window in an excavated area. When talking about egress windows in basements, window wells are a necessary part of the conversation. Window wells are designed to create some space around the window and keep the surrounding soil from pressing against the glass.

Because it creates space around the window, it also allows for natural light to filter in through the window, while improving drainage to keep water out of the basement. Window wells are also designed to have built-in ladders or steps for emergency exits and a means of egress via windows in the basement.

Window wells also vary in design. They can be U-shaped or rectangular. They may be designed to be more structural or flexible. They are typically made from concrete and masonry, metal, plastic, or a combination of these materials. If metal is used, it is usually galvanized corrugated steel, which is both cost-effective and durable. Composite window wells tend to be the most popular and are also durable and cost-effective.

Does Your Basement Need a Window Well?

If your basement is below ground level and/or there is a basement bedroom, your basement needs an egress window with a window well. Even if your basement will not have a bedroom, if it is below ground level and has a window, you will want a window well for structural integrity and to prevent water damage.

If there is a bedroom in the basement, there will be specific size requirements for the window well to meet building codes. Typically, window wells in this case must be at least 9 square feet. Your contractor will be able to work with you and ensure your window well meets building codes for emergency egress.

6 Benefits of Window Wells

These are a few of the biggest benefits of window wells:

Window wells provide emergency egress.

They improve drainage and prevent water damage.

Window wells improve and protect the structural integrity of your home.

They allow for more natural light and ventilation in the basement.

Window wells help prevent damage from pests.

Window well covers improve safety and insulation.

1. Window Wells Provide Emergency Egress

One of the biggest benefits of windows wells is that they provide egress in an emergency. Egress window wells are designed and installed to provide accessible, quick, and safe exits from a below-grade basement in an emergency. Not only does this improve safety and security for people in the basement, but window wells also help meet building codes for basement bedrooms.

2. They Improve Drainage and Prevent Water Damage

Similar to the benefits of retaining walls, window wells improve drainage around basement windows, keep dirt and soil from pressing against windows, and help prevent water damage to basement windows and a home’s foundation.

They are typically built with gravel at the bottom and connecting drains to keep water from pooling and redirect it away from the home’s foundation. Additionally, this helps prevent rust on window exteriors and helps reduce the risk of basement flooding.

3. Window Wells Improve and Protect the Structural Integrity of Your Home

Because window wells provide space and a buffer between below-grade basement windows and the surrounding soil, they help protect the windows and prevent damage to them. With the added drainage and redirecting water away from the foundation, window wells also help protect your home from water damage and help protect the structural integrity of your home. This is why they are often a popular addition for below-grade basements, even when they are not required for emergency egress.

4. They Allow For More Natural Light and Ventilation in the Basement

Bedrooms, brighter living spaces, and more natural light are all basement remodeling trends. Having windows to allow for more natural light in a basement, as well as ventilation when needed, makes a big difference in comfort and the overall atmosphere.

Disregarding the windows and forgetting about natural light are mistakes to avoid with finished basements. However, with basements that are below ground level, it can be difficult to access natural light. With below-grade windows, window wells create some space between the surrounding soil and the window, which allows natural light to reach it.

5. Window Wells Help Prevent Damage From Pests

Window wells create a barrier to keep the surrounding soil and water away from the basement windows. An added bonus is that it’s a barrier that can also keep pests, like insects, rodents, other small animals, etc., away from the window. This is one of the many benefits of a finished basement that you also get with window well covers. A window well with a cover provides better protection and other benefits.

6. Window Well Covers Improve Safety and Insulation

In addition to better protection against pests, window well covers also help improve safety around the window well and insulation for the basement. Window well covers help prevent falls and also help burglar-proof your basement windows.

They allow for easy exit in an emergency from the basement, while blocking unwanted access to it from the outside. Well-built window wells equipped with window well covers also add insulation to your home, which helps to increase energy efficiency.

7 Considerations For Window Wells

Although they may have specific requirements to meet building codes, window wells still have a lot of flexibility for customization to fit what you need for your home. Your contractor will be able to walk through the options and build what you need. Here are some considerations for window wells:

Dimensions and Size

Material

Shape

Ladders or Steps

Drainage

Covers

Maintenance

1. Dimensions and Size

The dimensions and size of a window well will depend on your home, the type of basement window, and more. Window wells should be properly sized for the basement window and should extend to at least 8 inches below the window sill.

If an egress window well needs to meet building code requirements for a basement bedroom, there will be minimums that it will need to meet, but you will have some flexibility beyond that as well. For basement bedrooms, the requirements for egress window wells are typically that they need to be at least 9 square feet with at least 36 inches of clearance.

This is one of the things to consider before finishing your basement to make sure all building codes are met. A good contractor will be well-versed in local building codes and will ensure your project meets requirements.

2. Material

Window wells can be made with concrete, metal, plastic, or a combination. Composite window wells tend to be the most popular. They are durable, while also being cost-effective. Composite window wells are also more customizable.

They can be designed to look and feel like real stone to provide light, improve safety, and boost curb appeal. Your contractor will work with you to determine what material works best for your home, the excavation, and the installation.

3. Shape

Although not necessarily the most important aspect of a window well, the shape is still a consideration. Whether you opt for rounded (U-shaped) or rectangular window wells, you want them to match your home’s exterior and look good.

4. Ladders or Steps

Deeper window wells will require a ladder or steps for safety and egress. There will also be building codes related to ladders or steps and depth for egress window wells. Typically, a ladder or steps are required for window wells that extend deeper than 44 inches. Depending on the depth of the window well, a ladder or steps may still be recommended, even if it is not strictly required by building codes.

5. Drainage

Drainage and waterproofing are big considerations for any part of your home, and especially for any exterior features. For window wells, proper drainage and waterproofing are essential to prevent basement flooding and water damage to basement windows, siding, and foundation.

Gravel and exterior drains at the bottom of window wells assist with drainage. If necessary for the specific location and installation, an interior drain, which is a drainpipe connected to a sump pump, may be recommended. Your contractor will take your home, lot, and specific situation into account to ensure your window well drainage system is properly designed and installed.

6. Covers

Window well covers are another consideration for window wells. Not only do these improve safety, but they also assist with keeping water, dirt, debris, and pests out of the window well and away from the home. Covers can range from grids and grates to solid covers. Solid covers are the best option for insulating the window well and keeping everything out of it. They can also be made to be transparent or opaque to still allow light in and a clear view out.

7. Maintenance

Another consideration for window wells is maintenance. Although the window wells themselves do not often require much in terms of maintenance, you will want to account for some maintenance throughout the year.

At a minimum, it’s a good idea to check the drainage of your window well twice a year. A good guideline is to check it in the spring and then again in the fall. You also want to keep up with your landscaping and make sure you are clearing debris from around the well as you are doing outdoor work. This includes snow removal during the winter.

If you have a window well, this should be on your spring home maintenance checklist and something you monitor regularly. Keeping your window well clear keeps it functioning well and protecting your home, and ensures you still have a clear way out in case of emergency. You don’t want to wait until you have an emergency to find out that debris in your yard makes it difficult to use your window well.

1. Incorporating Unique Design Details

Unique design details can elevate your entry door and continue to be a popular door style trend of 2026. Built-in details, like inlaid panels, unique glass panels, geometric structures, and more, are popular as well as bright colors to help a door stand out. Going bright if you want to experiment or opting for a subtler color to better match your home exterior are some tips for choosing the best front door color.

2. Choosing Dutch Doors

Another option is going for a unique door structure. Dutch doors that open at the top and bottom separately are one of the types of doors that continue to become more popular. Although they are an older door design, Dutch doors are making a comeback thanks to the ability to open the top of the door while the bottom stays in place to keep children, dogs, and other pets inside. They can also be useful for letting in some air on a nice day and creating some airflow inside your home.

3. Adding More Glass For More Light

Allowing more natural light into your home can help make it feel brighter and more open, which is why more glass is showing up in door style trends to provide more light. This trend is showing up in more window options for entry doors, like glass panels, transom windows, sidelights, and more, to allow more light in without exposing a full view of the inside of the home.

For patio doors or doors where the interior of the home would not be on full display, full glass doors are a popular choice. The view, natural light, and more are some of the benefits of installing sliding glass patio doors.

Transom windows and sidelites are popular types of custom windows for doors. Check out the Zephyr Thomas team installing sidelites to enhance this homeowner’s front door!

<lite-youtube videoid="pFDkbWxUc2Q" params="controls=1&hd=1&enablejsapi=1&autohide=1&autoplay=1&rel=0"style="background-image: url(https://www.zephyrthomas.com/wp-content/uploads/yt_thumbnails/pFDkbWxUc2Q-hqdefault.jpg)"></lite-youtube>

4. Making Good Use of Moulding

Another one of the popular door style trends that continues to be popular in 2026 is making good use of moulding to add an interesting aesthetic to your new front door. Bold or unique moulding is consistently one of the interior design trends, and it’s one you can apply to your home exterior, too.

In addition to inlaid panels and glass panels, you can also add muntins or moulding to the glass panels in and around your door for an interesting look. Decorative muntins and grid work are some of the window style trends you can apply to the glass panels of your door.

Outside of the door itself, you can also get creative with moulding in the door frame to complement your door and enhance the look of your exterior entryway. Just make sure any design elements you add enhance and complement your home’s existing style. Mismatched and clashing design elements are home exterior mistakes to avoid.

5. Opting For More Door Options to Make Your Entryway Stand Out

Another one of the popular door style trends continuing in 2026 is to make your entryway stand out and make the front door a focal point for your home. You can do this with design details and entryway decor trends, but this style trend borders more on going all out with maximalism.

This door style trend is showing up in complete entryway overhauls that feature unique doors that stand out, in addition to a lot of details and construction. Oversized pivot doors are a popular way this trend is showing up. This trend is also showing up in upgrading both the entry door and the overall entry to feature bigger, taller, or wider doors than what is the standard. These are also factors that affect the cost of replacing a front door.

For some homes, a taller or wider door could mean upgrading and widening the entryways to make space for a bigger door and bigger impact. These are some exterior home remodeling ideas that could extend a little to the interior and make a big difference in overall curb appeal and home value.

6. Doubling Up With Double Doors

When it comes to bigger entryways that make a statement, it’s hard to ignore double doors. Instead of sticking with a single entry door, a door style trend continuing to gain popularity is to go with larger, oversized doors or double doors for the entryway.

Stylishness and ease of access are some benefits of French doors that can make them a good choice for a double door installation where you want a lot of natural light. Take a look at this French door installation for double doors that let in a lot of light!

<lite-youtube videoid="KtmdhncB0P0" params="controls=1&hd=1&enablejsapi=1&autohide=1&autoplay=1&rel=0"style="background-image: url(https://www.zephyrthomas.com/wp-content/uploads/yt_thumbnails/KtmdhncB0P0-hqdefault.jpg)"></lite-youtube>

7. Mixing Textures

In addition to making a statement and adding unique design details, another one of the popular door style trends is to continue to mix and match textures and materials. This is one of the curb appeal trends that pops up in doors, siding, and a variety of other places.

Deep, natural colors are popular for exterior doors as well as steel, fiberglass, or aluminum doors manufactured to have high-end woodgrain finishes. Materials, colors, finishes, and more are all things to consider when replacing your front door. For mixing textures and materials, adding glass panels is one of the most popular ways to add another material and texture to doors.

Upgrading your entry door is a classic front door decor idea. Glass inserts are a door style trend that works well on entry doors, other exterior doors, and interior doors. Frosted glass or ribbed glass are popular glass panel options for interior doors that need to define a space while still giving a light-filled, open look and feel. With moulding and other options, you have a lot of flexibility when it comes to getting creative and creating the look you want. These also work well as garage door ideas that can upgrade your exterior.

8. Standing Out With Arches

Arch-topped designs are popular interior door style trends that sometimes pop up in exterior doors, too. Arched tops are a structural detail either around the door or in the door itself. This door style trend shows up in either place or sometimes both.

A door with an arch above it can create an interesting entryway look. A door with an arched top can also make a door stand out and provide an interesting visual to the door. Often, an arched top door results in a slightly taller door, which is a bonus for homeowners who want a little more vertical clearance in their doorways.

9. Saving Space With Interior Doors

Another popular door style trend is saving space with sliding doors and pocket doors. This is specific to interior door trends. Although sliding barn doors and other hanging sliding doors do need some extra space for sliding back and forth, they don’t require the same outward clearance that a swinging door would.

For some home designs and room layouts, this can work better and maximize space. Similarly, pocket doors are popular because they slide into a “pocket” in the wall to open instead of swinging out. Pocket doors often have a reputation for being space-saving for this reason and for giving a sleek, modern look and feel.

10. Moving Towards Minimalism With Interior Doors

Although maximalism and doors as design features are still popular design styles for exterior and interior doors, the other side of the spectrum is also popular for interior doors. For modern, minimalist atmospheres, interior doors that blend seamlessly and are almost invisible are popular. For this look, interior doors match the wall panels around them for “invisible doors” that can still be found and easily used when needed, but do not stand out as a focal point in a room.

Get a New Door That Suits Your Home

If you’ve been thinking about a kitchen remodel, but aren’t sure where to start, it can be helpful to look at trends to see if anything inspires you. Remodeling your kitchen can add value to your home, and it can be customized to exactly what you want. Here are a few kitchen remodeling trends of 2026 to inspire you:

Embrace bold surfaces.

Add an eat-in kitchen.

Improve accessibility with features for aging-in-place.

Include plenty of storage.

Plan for a bigger and more functional kitchen island.

Think about a beverage station.

Take a tech-forward approach by integrating smart home technology.

Upgrade the kitchen backsplash.

Consider sustainable and eco-friendly materials.

1. Embrace Bold Surfaces

Updating your countertops and cabinets is one of the best ways to update your kitchen. A popular kitchen remodeling trend is to pick bold surfaces for your countertops and cabinets. For a truly bold statement, pick some unique materials, such as petrified wood or onyx.

These materials will create a focal point in your kitchen. Pick natural stone countertops with a unique pattern for a more understated look. Natural stone adds a luxurious feel to a kitchen, and if you choose a durable stone, it will be practical, too. You can also pick colors and materials that provide a contrast, which is a small kitchen detail that can make a big difference.

If you want to make a statement, consider a popular kitchen cabinet trend of bold cabinetry colors or even a two-tone kitchen design style. Pair darker cabinet colors, such as navy, emerald, or even black, with lighter upper cabinetry. Consider light oak, white, or even a light blue or green to help create some depth and contrast in your kitchen.

This is a great way to play around with color and create some visual interest. Keep the rest of your kitchen design simple and classic. Opt for classic and timeless backsplashes and countertops. This keeps the focus on your cabinetry and doesn’t visually overwhelm your kitchen.

2. Add an Eat-In Kitchen

If you have a family, an eat-in kitchen offers some functionality to your home. Having a spot right in your kitchen to sit down for meals is convenient. You have close access to food, a cooktop, and a sink. You can try a breakfast nook, an island with seating, which is a kitchen island idea, or simply allow enough space for a kitchen table.

When your space isn’t used for mealtimes, it’s a great place for kids to do homework or play. Having them nearby but in a designated space allows you to keep an eye on them without them being underfoot.

3. Improve Accessibility With Features For Aging-in-Place

Designing a kitchen that will be useful as you age is a popular kitchen remodeling trend. A kitchen that works for various age stages is a popular home remodeling idea for aging in place. It’s best to pick a universal kitchen design that’s classic and functional.

As you design, keep in mind that your accessibility needs may change as your life changes. You may need room for a wheelchair or walker, so designing a kitchen now that works for any future needs will drastically reduce headaches and make your life easier. Thinking about how your kitchen works and how it can work in the future is an essential kitchen remodeling tip.

Common remodeling trends for creating a kitchen that works at various ages include wider drawer and cabinet pulls, rounder countertop edges, and non-slip flooring. And, don’t forget proper lighting! Lighting your kitchen effectively is an important thing to consider when remodeling a kitchen.

4. Include Plenty of Storage

Extra storage is always welcome in any home remodel, and prioritizing it is an essential kitchen remodeling tip. Making sure remodeling plans account for ample storage is something many homeowners should prioritize.

Not having enough storage can be a sign it’s time to remodel your kitchen. Adding a pantry to your kitchen design can help maximize food and cookware storage out of the way. Ask for custom cabinetry that has storage solutions for pots, pans, cookie sheets, and other items built into it.

Built-in features and cleverly hidden storage are kitchen cabinet trends that you can use to maximize storage in your kitchen remodel. Features like appliance garages can keep bigger appliances on your counter while still keeping them hidden away.

5. Plan For a Bigger and More Functional Kitchen Island

Bigger sizes are kitchen island trends and are becoming a popular remodeling trend. Bigger kitchen islands give you more food prep area as well as more eating space. It’s also a great feature to have if you like to entertain often. Kitchen islands can also have more storage space, allowing you to keep your counters free and clear. These changes are big benefits of kitchen remodeling.

Remember, islands aren’t just another piece of furniture. They are a tool. Making sure they are well-designed and functional can make your kitchen so much better, increasing home value and enjoyment. When you’re in the design process, take time to think about the kitchen island. If you already have one, think about what doesn’t work for you. Once you figure those things out, make the necessary changes for your kitchen island to greatly improve your kitchen.

If a kitchen island is a new part of your kitchen renovation, be sure to include plenty of storage and a workspace area. Practical seating is also important at a kitchen island and is a popular kitchen island idea. Even if you have another designated dining area, people naturally tend to gather around a kitchen island.

6. Think About a Beverage Station

If coffee, tea, or cocktails are a part of your routine, why not designate a specific space just for their prep? This can be a simple setup, or it can be elaborate, with plenty of built-in features. Take stock of your proposed kitchen layout and see if there’s any wasted space.

If there is, this would be a great place to have a beverage station. You can have space for a mini fridge, a small wine fridge, a sink, and any necessary appliances. Make sure you have storage for specific glasses and any other supplies you may need.

If you don’t have any wasted space, dedicate a portion of your countertop to beverages. Using an appliance garage is a great way to keep all of your beverage supplies in one spot without cluttering up your counter.

7. Take a Tech-Forward Approach by Integrating Smart Home Technology

Kitchen remodeling trends are also seeing an uptick in integrating smart home technology, like:

Smart appliances

Touchless faucets

Smart lighting

Smart Appliances

Homeowners are beginning to embrace these smart appliances and fixtures that can help improve daily kitchen tasks. There are smart induction cooktops as well as smart refrigerators. These appliances can be controlled either through your phone or with a voice assistant. This allows you to check on food cooking or assessing what’s in your refrigerator while you are out of the house.

Touchless Faucets

Other smart home technology in the kitchen can include touchless faucets. These can be especially helpful when you have dirty hands and don’t want to touch any handles. Simply wave your hand in front of the faucet, and the water turns on. Some of these faucets even have voice command options as well as temperature presets. These water systems can also notify you of any leaks before they become a much bigger issue.

Smart Lighting

Smart lighting is another option to think about. Very basic systems can allow you to set timers for certain lights to go on at specific times. However, more advanced systems can include motion-activated lighting, such as under-cabinet lighting. There are also options to adjust the lighting color or brightness.

This allows for achieving just the right level for any kitchen task or for entertaining. These systems often come with energy monitoring, which allows you to see if there’s an area using too much energy and cut back if necessary. Upgrading to these systems is just one of the tips to make your home more energy efficient.

8. Upgrade the Kitchen Backsplash

Upgrading the kitchen backsplash is a great way to modernize an outdated kitchen. There are a lot of different options to choose from, and current trends tend to lean into a luxurious and seamless design. Another option is a full stone slab rather than individual tiles. These often match the countertop material, which creates a very seamless and grout-free design, making cleaning much easier.

For a more artistic or bold look, consider mosaic tiles or a fun twist on a classic subway tile design. While a kitchen backsplash should work harmoniously with the rest of your kitchen, it is also a good spot to try out tile trends, a fun design, or a color.

9. Consider Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Materials

Sustainability is also another rising trend. Homeowners are looking for materials that are responsibly sourced, countertops made with recycled materials, or even low-VOC paint. Eco-friendly materials aren’t just good for the Earth; they tend to be more affordable and low-maintenance. These often tend to be more cost-effective in the long run, too.

Look into reclaimed wood or cabinetry for your kitchen as a way to upgrade kitchen cabinets. Not only does this offer a unique touch to any kitchen design, but it keeps your budget much more manageable! You might also be able to get a much higher-end material at a much lower cost, allowing you to have a much more luxurious kitchen design.

Garages are a useful aspect of homes, whether fully detached, semi-detached, or fully attached to your home. This extra space gives you storage options for your cars and belongings. However, not everything can or should be stored in your garage. Here are a few things to never store in your garage:

Propane tanks

Paint and other chemicals

Art

Pet food

Important documents

Pantry items

Firewood

Wooden furniture

Electronics

Clothing or fabrics

Wine

Books

Photos

1. Propane Tanks

One of the benefits of a garage addition is extra storage. However, some things like propane tanks should never be stored in a garage. Propane tanks can leak, which may cause fires, especially if sparked by a car starting. While it’s a good idea to keep propane out of the elements, it’s safer to keep the tanks in a shaded and well-ventilated area outdoors.

2. Paint and Other Chemicals

Paint and other chemicals are other things that should not be stored in your garage, and are also things you should never store in your attic. If paint is exposed to heat and cold over time, the paint can become damaged. Paint should be stored somewhere cool and dark, like a basement. Make sure children and pets cannot access it since paint can be toxic.

Make sure you’re not storing any flammable chemicals in your garage. Much like propane tanks, they can cause fires if sparked by a starting car or extreme heat during the summer. It’s best to store these types of chemicals in a well-ventilated shed, away from your home.

3. Art

While it might be tempting to store art in your garage, it might not be the best place for it. The environment in garages is often not controlled, which can put your art at risk for mold or mildew. A clean and dry place, like a closet or temperature-controlled room, is a much better spot.

4. Pet Food

Storing pet food in your garage is also inadvisable. The fluctuation in temperatures can cause the food to become moldy during warmer weather, which can make your pet sick. Plus, pet food is basically an invitation for mice and other critters to come in for a nice little snack.

They are often enticed by the smell and can chew through even the toughest of bags. If you must store pet food in the garage, store it in well-secured plastic containers and keep an eye on it during warm weather.

5. Important Documents

Having access to important documents might not be something you need frequently, so it might feel like a good idea to store important documents in the garage. However, it can be risky to store paper in an uncontrolled environment like a garage. Factors like humidity and unwanted pests can damage paper. Try to consolidate exactly what you need into a file box to keep stored inside your home.

6. Pantry Items

The garage is a great place to keep an extra refrigerator or freezer if you have the space for it. However, this is where food storage should stop. Pantry items should be kept inside in a cool environment. If you don’t have enough storage, it may be time for a kitchen or basement remodel.

Extra storage is one of the most popular kitchen remodeling trends. A built-in pantry, extra cabinets and drawers, as well as other storage solutions are great ways to maximize food storage within your home.

7. Firewood

Having a fireplace is a fun interior design trend to have in a home. While it might feel convenient to store firewood in your garage, it’s not the most ideal place. Firewood needs to be kept in an area with good airflow to stay dry.

Plus, bugs like beetles or ants can come in with that firewood, and they are much closer to your home’s walls if your firewood is stored in your garage. This can lead to a very unwanted insect infestation.

It’s best to store firewood outside, a little bit away from your home. If you want it to be in a covered area, consider storing it in a well-ventilated shed. Otherwise, stack it in a pile and cover it during heavy rain or snow.

8. Wooden Furniture

Similar to firewood, you also need to be careful about storing wooden furniture in the garage, especially indoor furniture made of wood that is designed to be outside or weather the elements. Fluctuating temperatures, moisture, and pests can wreak havoc on wooden furniture. Although you can store these items in the garage temporarily, they really should not be stored in a garage year-round, unless your garage is well-insulated and climate-controlled.

9. Electronics

Because the temperature in garages often fluctuates pretty drastically, electronics and similar items, like records or DVDs, are another thing that should never be kept in a garage. These temperature fluctuations can ruin discs, circuits, or even magnetic components. Even if these items are in tight bins, humidity and temperature changes can still affect electronics.

It’s a much better idea to store electronics and other similar items in a temperature-controlled environment, like an office closet or finished basement. If your home has no closets, there are a few things you can do to keep things organized. You can implement some storage solutions, like shelving units and storage bins, as well as a pegboard to organize items like cords. You can also consider a home remodel that includes plenty of closets. Rethinking interior rooms and maximizing space are home renovation trends.

10. Clothing or Fabrics

Unfortunately, your garage should not be a second closet. Storing fabrics in the garage can make them more susceptible to insect infestations. Garage temperatures also fluctuate way too much and can cause mold and mildew to grow on fabrics. Another reason not to store fabrics in the garage is that garages sometimes have strong odors because of vehicle exhaust or trash, which can ruin fabric.

Extra clothing, linens, and bedding are much better off stored indoors in either a finished basement or a hallway closet. If your attic is temperature-controlled and well-insulated, storing these items there can be a good idea within reason. Make sure they are enclosed in bins or in vacuum-sealed bags. These bags are great because they keep items airtight and often can shrink down these items, saving you lots of space.

11. Wine

Another item that shouldn’t be stored in your garage is wine. Wine needs a specific temperature to age well, and garages are far too temperamental. Wine should be stored in a cool, dark place or a temperature-controlled wine fridge. Basements are a much more ideal option to store wine, as long as the temperature doesn’t get too cold or fluctuate too much.

Adding a wine cellar design to a basement remodel is a popular basement remodeling trend. This is especially useful if you enjoy collecting vintage or newer bottles of wine. Consider adding plenty of wine storage as well as a wine fridge.

12. Books

If your home library is slowly taking over your home, don’t look to the garage to store your extra books. Books should be protected from excess moisture that can occur during temperature fluctuations in a garage. Besides, garages often invite unwanted guests, such as rodents or other pests. These creatures can destroy books, so it’s best to keep books stored away inside in a closet or a climate-controlled basement.

13. Photos

Much like books, photos or film also should not be kept in a garage. These items are susceptible to warping from the heat or damage from insects or mildew. These types of items are often priceless, so don’t risk storing them in the garage where they could get destroyed.

It’s much better to store these items in a dry, airtight space where the temperature stays consistent. If your basement and attic are temperature-controlled, these may be good places to store extra photos and mementos. However, make sure they are in airtight and sealed containers and check on them every once in a while to make sure they’re still in good condition. As an extra precaution, consider digitizing these mementos. Not only will you have a backup in case of an emergency, but you will be able to share them much more easily with friends and family!

When you begin a bathroom remodeling project, there are a lot of decisions to make. One of those decisions might be whether your walk-in shower or shower/bathtub combination has a door and what kind of door it is. Shower doors are a great option for bathrooms because they are much more mold-resistant than a shower curtain. There are quite a few options to choose from. Here are a few shower door options to consider for your bathroom remodel to help you decide:

Framed shower door

Frameless shower door

Semi-frameless shower door

Fixed shower door

Sliding shower door

Hinged shower door

Pivoting shower door

Steam shower door

Half-wall shower door

No shower door

1. Framed Shower Door

Framed shower doors have been around the longest and are a very standard kind of shower door. Framed shower doors have a thin panel of glass that is surrounded by metal framing. They are also one of the most durable shower door options because of the metal frame that keeps the door sturdy and stable.

Because these doors are the easiest to install, they tend to be the most budget-friendly option. Framed shower doors have a few different types of operating mechanisms, such as sliding, hinged, and pivot.

This type of shower door will require some maintenance and cleaning to keep mold at bay. If you have a lot of mold and mildew growth in your bathroom, this is one of the signs it’s time to remodel your bathroom. Using a squeegee on your glass-framed shower door can help remove excess moisture, helping to keep mildew and mold at bay.

2. Frameless Shower Door

Frameless shower doors are made entirely of glass and do not have any metal framing. Due to the lack of any framing, these doors tend to be very modern. To account for the lack of a supporting frame, the glass is much thicker to give stability and support to the door.

Frameless shower doors are easy to clean because the lack of a frame means fewer crevices for moisture to collect and hide. Even though there is no metal frame, these doors do not leak as long as a professional contractor does the installation.

A professional will ensure that this frameless door is cut to the exact shower dimensions, and a sweep and seal will also be used to keep the enclosure leak-proof. Making sure things are installed properly is just one of the reasons to use a home improvement contractor.

3. Semi-Frameless Shower Door

If you’re looking for a design that combines the best features of framed and frameless doors for your bathroom remodel, a semi-frameless door might be a good option to consider. A semi-frameless door has glass panels that have solid hinges and a minimal amount of framing on the sides. This type of door is perfect for a contemporary bathroom design.

These doors do require a little bit of cleaning and maintenance along the framing, but they tend to be easier to clean than framed shower doors. It’s important to have a professional install these doors to prevent any leaks.

4. Fixed Shower Door

For a space-saving style door, you may want to consider a fixed shower door. These doors have one glass panel that doesn’t move, functioning almost like a wall partition. Because these doors don’t move, you don’t need any extra floor space to allow them to open, making them a perfect pick for remodeling a small bathroom.

Fixed shower doors are simple, but still stylish. Their simplicity allows them to work in nearly any design style. However, because these are more like partitions with open space for entry, water may splash out. You may need to invest in some durable bathmats to keep your floors dry.

5. Sliding Shower Doors

Sliding glass doors are one of the most popular types of shower doors. These doors slide from side to side on a track and take up minimal space. With this type of shower door, you can choose from different types of shower glass panels that are installed on the track. You also have the option for all panels to move or for just one panel to move while the other stays immobile. If all panels move, this is called a bypass door.

Sliding shower doors do take up some width because of the double-panel sliding mechanism, but they’re great if you don’t want a door that swings outward. Soap scum can build up in the tracks, requiring some more routine maintenance and cleaning. However, sliding shower doors can work on a variety of shower styles as well as bathtub/shower combinations.

6. Hinged Shower Doors

This type of shower door works like any other typical door, as they open and close with a hinge function. In most cases, these doors tend to open outward, so they may not work as well in a small bathroom that doesn’t give them space to open.

Hinged shower doors come in a variety of styles, making them a great choice for almost any design style, but especially walk-in showers. This bigger opening is especially helpful for those with mobility issues. This is also a benefit of walk-in showers.

7. Pivoting Shower Door

Pivoting shower doors are a more luxurious counterpart to hinged shower doors. Instead of being hinged on the side and swinging open and closed from the side, these doors pivot open on a vertical hinge at the top and bottom of the door.

Either side can be pushed to “twist” or “spin” the door open. Pivot doors are a great option for small shower spaces because they don’t take up much wall space. However, you still do need to account for floor space for the door to swing out.

8. Steam Shower Door

A steam shower door is when the shower enclosure is enclosed entirely to seal off the shower area. With steam shower doors, glass panels extend from the floor/shower base to the ceiling to create a shower enclosure that keeps steam in. Steam shower doors are designed to allow entry to the shower enclosure and close to create an airtight enclosure to turn your walk-in shower into a steam room.

9. Half-Wall Shower Door

If you prefer a minimalist or modern shower design, you may want to consider a half-wall shower door. This shower remodeling idea features one side with a wall of about 3-4 feet in height. A glass panel sits on top of that wall to help keep water inside, while a door is on the other side of the wall. This allows your shower to feel open and airy, but keeps all of the water contained.

10. No Door

If you have a large bathroom or a large walk-in shower, you may opt to have no shower door. Having no shower door will give your bathroom a luxurious feel, and is a tip to turn your bathroom into a home spa.

Because there is no glass panel or framing for tracks, there’s minimal maintenance beyond caring for the tile or other shower wall material. This type of shower typically has no barrier, making it a great choice for those with mobility issues, especially wheelchair users. It’s also a helpful home remodeling idea for aging in place.

If you’re unsatisfied with your home’s exterior, consider a home remodel. However, before you embark on a home remodeling project, there are considerations you need to make first. As you make decisions, there are also some mistakes to avoid. Here are a few home exterior mistakes to avoid with your next remodel:

Mistake #1 – Not having a budget in mind.

Mistake #2 – Using your budget as the only guiding factor.

Mistake #3 – Mismatching design elements.

Mistake #4 – Not considering the age of your house.

Mistake #5 – Not working with an experienced home improvement contractor.

Mistake #1 – Not Having a Budget in Mind

A budget is always necessary when planning a remodeling project of any kind. Plus, it’s one of the questions you should ask yourself before starting a home remodel. Having a budget in place can help guide your decisions and alleviate some stress. You should have a good idea of how much money you plan to spend on your project before you even meet with a home improvement contractor.

Once you meet with a few home improvement contractors, you need to compare home improvement quotes depending on your budget. Once you’ve chosen a contractor, they can help you make any changes to your budget or offer any advice. They can also help you figure out how much to allocate for any unforeseen obstacles, any proposed upgrades, and things like long-term maintenance and repairs. This will also help your contractor give you a more accurate, finalized quote.

A clear scope of work, project cost, and more are things that should be in a home improvement quote. Once the building process begins, your contractor will use your budget as a guiding resource. This should help minimize any surprises and extra spending. It will also keep your project running as smoothly as possible.

Mistake #2 – Using Your Budget as the Only Guiding Factor

Using a budget is important when choosing materials. However, choosing materials simply based on cost isn’t always a good idea. You need to take into account certain factors like durability and efficiency, because these things can actually affect a budget in the long run.

Choosing cheaper materials upfront might seem cost-effective now, but they can break down, warp, or fade much quicker than higher-quality materials. If they are less energy-efficient, you also run the risk of higher energy bills over time, which can cut into any initial savings you may have had. If you have to replace these materials in a few years, you’ll actually spend more money than if you had just gone with the upgraded options in the first place.

Work with your home contractor to decide where it makes sense to spend a little more money for a higher-quality product or an upgrade. When evaluating materials and upgrades, you also want to take into account things like warranty, long-term maintenance, and the climate where you live. Some materials are fine in mild weather, while a harsher climate might damage them, leading to expensive repairs.

Mistake #3 – Mismatching Design Elements

Usually, the goal of a home exterior remodel is to improve the way your house looks. When choosing materials like siding or adding new features, you need to think about how they complement existing features and architecture. If your choices look out of place, your home won’t have a cohesive design.

Having choices or design elements that don’t work together greatly affects your home’s curb appeal, so it’s important to make sure things match or work together. Your contractor should be able to help you look at a variety of materials and curb appeal ideas to pick the right ones for your home.

Mistake #4 – Not Considering the Age of Your House

There are a lot of ways to bring life to an older home, but you need to be aware of how old your home is. This is important because you need to understand how your home was built and what materials were used, especially on the exterior and foundation. Because of the age, there may be some infrastructure challenges to take into account as well. These infrastructure damages could be due to a weather event, fire, or simply different building techniques.

You should also be aware of building code violations. Building standards may have been different when your home was built, so your renovations need to meet current building code standards. This is one of the reasons to use a whole home improvement contractor. Whole home improvement contractors understand building codes and regularly handle things like permits, which can help the process move more smoothly.

If your home was built before 1978, you will need to use an EPA-certified remodeler. Depending on how long ago your home was built, it could be considered a heritage home. Some areas have regulations on heritage homes that regulate what kind of updates can be made to a home’s exterior. Before you begin any exterior renovations, you need to make sure any updates are approved for a heritage home.

Mistake #5 – Not Working With an Experienced Home Improvement Contractor

To help your home renovation project go as smoothly as possible, it’s highly recommended that you work with an experienced home improvement contractor. Home improvement contractors have years of professional experience and can help guide you in the renovation project. This experience is one of the biggest benefits of working with a home improvement contractor.

A home remodeling contractor can also help your project move much more efficiently. They have experience with timelines and making sure projects go smoothly. Professional home improvement contractors can help you pick the right materials, take care of things like permits, ordering materials, and lead a team of builders and other professional contractors. This eliminates a lot of stress for you as a homeowner, making a home renovation project seem much more attainable.
